Scott Statue - In order to get to the US Base in the Ross Sea, you must first travel to Christchurch New Zealand, where the US, New Zealand and Italian Antarctic programs have their deployment center.  Once in Christchurch you get issued your cold weather clothing and get briefed on your 5 hour flight south to McMurdo Station.  Christchurch has a long history in Antarctic expeditions as this was the jumping off point for Capt Scott and Ernest Shackeltons expeditions.  There is a statute of Capt Scott in downtown Christchurch.
